Other Fine World War II Sites This tragic fire in 1973 in St. Louis, Missouri, destroyed 75 percent of US Army military records during the period including most of the records from WW II involving the 6th Infantry Division.
Now the only way to obtain records is largely a task of reconstruction from other sources.

Pacific Theater Historical Naratives Before the 6th Infantry Division Arrived in Milne Bay the Australians and the United States 32nd Infantry Division had already been laying the groundwork for Operation Cartwheel, in which the 6th Infantry Division would play a part at Wakde/Sarmi (Lone Tree Hill) and Sansapor. It was at Milne Bay that the 6th Infantry Division met the Australian forces who had engaged in such incredibly difficlut campaigns as the Kokoda Track, Buna, Gona, and Lae. The scope and difficulty of the New Guinea campaign is largely overlooked as are the incredible sacrifices of the 32 Infantry Division which was pitted early in the war at Buna. The 32nd Infantry Division saw more fighting in the Pacific than any other unit in the Unted States Army.

Pacific Theater Historical Naratives Remember an "Army" is a far larger component of the US Army than a "Division." The Sixth Infantry Division was a very small part (about 15,000 men) within the over 100,000 troop-stong "Sixth Army." Here are the list of infantry divisions that were in the Sixth Army:
6, 7, 24, 25, 31, 33, 37, 38, 40, 41, 43, 77, 81, 96, 98, and Americal. There was also: the 1st Cavalry Division, the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th Marine Divisions, the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Engineer Special Brigades, the 32nd, 40th, 41st, 98th, and 102nd Antiaircraft Artillery Brigades, the 158th Regimental Combat Team, the 112th Cavalry Regimental Combat Team, not to mention the 7 different Corps Headquarters all under General Walter Krueger. The 6th Army suffered a total of 64,293 casualties of which 13,423 were killed in action (KIA).
