So happy to find this site! I had the honor to meet a gentleman that was a BAR gunner with the 6th recently at the Museum I work at, and was blown away.. since I myself am a Sightseer from the 90s, having served in the 6ID(L) in Alaska..
I am looking for any information on my Uncle Sergeant Walter Renz ID #37057926. I know he was killed on June 23, 1944 in New Guinea. I am trying to determine if he was sent to the Phillipines for treatment in New Guinea and subsequently died there. We do not know much about our Uncle although I am named after him. We do have a Purple Heart he was awarded and a docum ent signed by Franklin D. Roosevelt recognizing him giving his life for his country. I was told that he died on Lone Tree Hill in the large fight with the Japanese but wonder why he would have been buried in the Phillipines? Any help you can give me would be appreciated. Regards, John Walter Renz
Mr. Renz:
Thank you for your contact. Has anyone in your family filed a Standard Form 180 to see if you can get his service record. If your uncle died on June 23, 1944, the 6th Infantry Division would likely have still been in the Lone Tree Hill Battle near Maffin Bay. Do you know what regiment he was in? The website does have general information about that battle and units within the 6th Infantry. I encourage you to review those. Good luck in your research.
Sincerely,
Thomas Price
Mr Renz;
Thanks to member Gary Johnson for the research he purchased from the archives, I was able to find his company.
I will try to piece together the events and email them to you.
