I need to post a correction to this post made by me.
My grandfather wrote this memoir from his memory; however, from my research, I have learned that this mission could not have taken place in March if it were, in fact, while Company B was near San Jose. This mission would have had to have taken place in February, which is when he received his Bronze Star Medal (BSM) “for meritorious actions against the enemy at Mt. Balaxnax (SIC).”
The other possibility is that this mission did not take place near San Jose, but San Matteo, as his company was in combat there in March. That would place the mission that he went on MT. Parawagan, then known as Mt. Pacawagan. However, I would think that volunteering to participate in a mission like this would have warranted at least a BSM award, and as far as I can find through research, he was never awarded one for his time in San Matteo in March.
