My uncle was in Company B, 1st Infantry. He died in Sansapor of scrub typhus. If you have any stories about this, I would like to hear them. Thank You!
Unfortunately I do not. My grandfather didn’t join up with the 6th until after the New Guinea campaign. He was an anti-aircraft gunner and got folded into the infantry as a replacement after New Guinea. He got his combat experience beginning with the Luzon landing through the occupation of Korea.
I remember the name Delvecchio from my father, Carl Ehlert, who was a squad leader in Company B on New Guenea and Luzon. I am sure they went thru basic together at Ft. Leonard Wood, but don’t know much about your uncle other than that. My father has been gone since 1993, so most of the stories have been lost. I have some photos that were taken overseas, but other than my father, I couldn’t tell you who is in them.
I think all the time about what those men went thru and how good my generation has had it in this country because of them.
